What are PS2 files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a PS2 file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your PS2 files.

What is a PS2 file?

A .PS2 file is a PS2 Memory Card Image file.

PS2 Memory Card Image files are binary images of PlayStation 2 memory cards used by the PCSX2 emulator. They store all the saved game data from a virtual memory card into a single file. These files allow PCSX2 to imitate the physical PS2 memory card, enabling save, load, and delete operations in games just as if a real memory card were inserted. Typical sizes are 8 MB, 16 MB, 32 MB, or 64 MB, depending on what capacity the virtual card was created with.

Such files are created and maintained by PCSX2. When you make a new virtual memory card in PCSX2, it writes a corresponding .PS2 file. PCSX2 also reads existing .PS2 files when games are launched and saves are accessed. Other utilities like MyMC or mymc++ can open these .PS2 files to extract individual game save files or import saves from other formats.

The format begins with an ASCII signature "Sony PS2 Memory Card Format " starting at byte 0.
