What is a PHC file?

A .PHC file is a Home Embroidery Format file.

Home Embroidery Format (file extension .PHC) is a stitch‐file format used by Brother sewing and embroidery machines to store completed designs or stitch patterns for sewing. These files contain the instructions the machine follows to create an embroidery pattern, including stitch placement, thread sequence, and other layout parameters. PHC files are produced by the machine's built-in embroidery system or associated software and are intended for transfer either internally (machine memory) or via removable media (CompactFlash, floppy disk, USB, etc.).

When using a Brother machine, designs edited on the machine or in supporting design-software may be saved directly into PHC format. In some models, cutwork or custom stitch patterns are saved or converted into PHC when stored in machine memory. Users often import PHC files into accompanying software for preview, editing, or conversion into more widely supported formats such as PES. PHC is among the formats the machine accepts for stitching.

Technical details: PHC files begin with the ASCII signature "#PHC" at byte offset 0 and include header text such as "Copyright by" starting at offset 8. Those signatures distinguish them from other Brother embroidery formats.
