What is an OGV file?

An .OGV file is an Ogg Video file.

Files that contain the .ogv file extension are most commonly associated with videos using the Ogg container format. This format can contain audio tracks, video sequences, subtitles, and other data in a single file.

Often you will hear Ogg in relation to Vorbis and Theora, which are encoding formats:

  • Ogg is the name of the container format for the audio, video, and metadata files.
  • Vorbis is the name of a free audio compression technology.
  • Theora is the name of a free lossy video compression technology.

The OGV file format is a video container format. OGV files can contain video streams that are associated with one or more video codecs, such as Theora and DivX. These files allow the recorded content within the container file to be played on a variety of different media players.
