Opening NC files

Did your computer fail to open a NC file? We explain what NC files are and recommend software that we know can open or convert your NC files.

What is a NC file?

The .nc file extension is used for a data file format that was developed by MathWorks, Inc. These NC files are also known as unidata network common data form files. These .nc files are generated by the Matlab software, which is a scientific and mathematical data manipulation program that was also created by MathWorks, Inc.

These NC files contain a set of machine-independent data formats along with a series of software libraries. These .nc files provide functions for accessing, sharing, distributing and creating scientific data, specifically array-oriented scientific information. The Matlab software was designed by MathWorks for Microsoft Windows PCs.

These .nc files are used internally by the Matlab software. It is best to leave these NC files alone, in order for the Matlab program to continue working properly.

Try a universal file viewer

In addition to the products listed above, I would suggest that you try a universal file viewer like Free File Viewer. It can open over 200 different types of files - and very likely yours too! Download Free File Viewer.
