What is a MD file?
MD files have multiple uses, and Markdown Document is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.
Markdown Document
Markdown files are a way of writing text in a simple format that can be converted to HTML, PDF, or any other desired output format with ease. Formatting is done by using simple symbols to indicate how the text should be formatted.
The purpose of markdown files is to simplify the formatting process and provide an easy way for people to write content without having to worry about formatting. The syntax of Markdown is straightforward and easy to learn. It can be used to create documents in many formats, including web pages, blogs, slideshows, and even ebooks.

While Markdown Document is a popular type of MD-file, we know of 5 different uses of the .MD file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.
Chaos Desktop Metadata File
Files that contain the .md file extension are primarily associated with the Chaos Desktop software application that is distributed by Chaos Systems AB. Chaos Desktop is a document management software application. This software creates data and metadata from template information.
The metadata files created by the Chaos Desktop application are saved with the .md file suffix.

We have identified one MD opener that is compatible with this specific type of MD file.

Mayura Draw Document
We know that one MD format is Mayura Draw Document. We have not yet analyzed in detail what these files contain and what they are used for. We're working on it.

MDCD Compressed Archive
The .md file extension is also used by MDCD 1.0. MDCD 1.0 is a file compression and decompression application that uses a 13 bit LZW algorithm. The files that are compressed using this compression utility are saved with the .md file extension.
Mike Davies Music Module
We know that one MD format is Mike Davies Music Module. We have not yet analyzed in detail what these files contain and what they are used for. We're working on it.
