While Markdown Document is a popular type of MD-file, we know of 5 different uses of the .MD extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.
Chaos Desktop Metadata File
Files that contain the .md file extension are primarily associated with the Chaos Desktop software application that is distributed by Chaos Systems AB. Chaos Desktop is a document management software application. This software creates data and metadata from template information.
The metadata files created by the Chaos Desktop application are saved with the .md file suffix.
MD opener for Windows
We have identified one MD opener that is compatible with this specific type of MD file.

MDCD Compressed Archive
The .md file extension is also used by MDCD 1.0. MDCD 1.0 is a file compression and decompression application that uses a 13 bit LZW algorithm. The files that are compressed using this compression utility are saved with the .md file extension.
