What are MCR files and how to open them

Important: Different programs may use files with the MCR file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your MCR file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While Circuit Designer Macro is a popular type of MCR-file, we know of 6 different uses of the .MCR file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

Minecraft Region File

A Minecraft Region file (with extension .mcr) stores a block of terrain data from a Minecraft Java Edition world. It contains map information for one region of the game world, covering a 32×32 - chunk area. These regions are created when you generate or explore terrain in Minecraft versions from Beta 1.3 through release 1.1. Each file is named r.x.z.mcr, where x and z are the region's coordinates (derived from the chunk coordinates divided by 32).

These files are produced by Minecraft itself when the world is saved, and they replace the older format where individual chunks were saved separately. They store multiple chunks together to improve performance when loading and saving world data. Minecraft reads these files whenever you move around or load parts of the world stored within these regions. After version 1.2.1, Minecraft replaced .mcr files with a newer region format (.mca) but supports converting older .mcr worlds automatically.

Internally, each .mcr file starts with an 8 KiB header split into two 4 KiB tables: the first table (1,024 entries) gives the file offsets and sizes of each chunk (in 4 KiB sectors), and the second gives timestamps for when each chunk was last modified. Following the header, the file stores chunk data in big-endian format; each chunk begins with its data length, then a compression type byte, then the compressed data (typically zlib compression). The file is padded so its total size is a multiple of 4 KiB.
