What are MCF files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a MCF file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your MCF files.

What is a MCF file?

MCF files have multiple uses, and MasterCook Cookbook is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

MasterCook Cookbook File

The .mcf file extension is most commonly used by the MasterCook recipe software programs. Versions 2 and later of this software use the .mcf file extension. The MCF files store the software's recipes, with each MCF file containing information about the recipe ingredients and cooking instructions.

MathCAD Font

The MathCAD Font (-MCF) format is a proprietary resource file used by PTC Mathcad (especially the classic versions up to Mathcad 15). It stores custom fonts and symbol definitions that Mathcad uses internally to render mathematical notation, equations, units, text in worksheets, and messages in its user-interface. These files are part of the application's support files, not user documents.

Mathcad does not provide tools for exporting or converting .MCF files into standard font formats like TTF or OTF. Users typically do not open or edit .MCF files directly; instead, Mathcad loads them from its installation directory (often a Fonts or Resources folder) at run-time to draw text or mathematical symbols in both screen display and printing. These files define vector or scalable font data used for both equation and general text styles in worksheets.

A distinguishing technical feature is that .MCF files begin with the ASCII signature vPixels: at offset zero. They also contain strings such as "HPIXELS" and "IMAGES," which indicate internal fields related to glyph dimensions and image-based or raster data embedded in some glyphs.

TMPGEnc Configuration File

TMPGEnc Configuration File (extension .MCF) is a preset or template file used by the TMPGEnc video encoding tool. It stores all the encoding settings - such as video format, bitrate, frame rate, GOP structure, audio settings, and system stream options - so that you can quickly reapply the same setup without entering all parameters manually.

TMPGEnc creates these files when you save a custom template or use one of its existing presets. When performing a conversion - to MPEG-1, MPEG-2 or similar - you can load an .MCF file to immediately apply a complete set of parameters. You can also place custom .MCF templates in TMPGEnc's Template folder so they show up in its template/load menu. Default templates are included and sometimes locked; loading a special file like unlock.mcf (from the Extra folder) restores access to all options.

Files in this format begin with the ASCII signature objectTMPEGConfigFile at byte offset zero.
