What are JWL files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a JWL file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your JWL files.

What is a JWL file?

JWL files have multiple uses, and Easy CD Creator's Jewel Case is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Easy CD Creator's Jewel Case

The jwl files generated by Easy CD Creator, a CD and DVD-burning software program developed by Roxio, are used to design custom jewel case inserts for CDs and DVDs.

Flat artwork files in the .jwl format are used to save the layout and design of custom jewel case inserts. This type of insert is typically placed in a CD or DVD's front cover and includes information about what's on the disc, such as its title, artist, track list, and other details.

Using Easy CD Creator's jewel case design tools, users can create a layout and add text and graphics to their jewel case insert. This will generate a.jwl file that can be saved and printed, offering the user an opportunity to make professional looking jewel case inserts for CDs and DVDs.

All known file formats using extension .JWL

While Easy CD Creator's Jewel Case is a popular type of JWL-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .JWL file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

Easy CD Creator's Label

Easy CD Creator's Label (.JWL) files are project files used by the program Label Creator, part of the Roxio Creator (formerly Roxio Easy CD Creator) software suite. They store layouts for disc labels, jewel case covers, booklets, inserts and similar printed media for CDs or DVDs. When you design a label or insert - adding text, graphics, borders or images - Label Creator saves your work in a .JWL file so you can edit or print it later using the same program.

Label Creator is the tool that creates .JWL files. The typical workflow is: launch Label Creator, choose or start a blank layout (for example, a jewel case front, back, disc label or booklet), add artwork, style elements and text, then save the design as .JWL. Later, that .JWL project can be reopened in Label Creator to continue editing, or sent to a printer to produce a physical CD/DVD package or label output.

Technically, these .JWL files use the Microsoft Compound File (also known as CFBF or OLE2) container format. They begin with the standard 8-byte signature D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1 00, indicating that the file contains multiple internal streams and storages (for example, graphics, layout metadata, text, style settings) packed together in a structured binary format.
