JNT File
What are JNT files and how to open them
Are you having problems opening a JNT file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your JNT files.
What is a JNT file?
A .JNT file is a Windows Journal file.
Windows Journal format (.JNT) is a proprietary notebook file format created by Microsoft for capturing handwritten notes, drawings, typed text and embedded images. It was used by the Windows Journal application, a pen-and-ink note-taking program shipped with Windows XP Tablet PC Edition through Windows 8.1. Files with this format act like digital sketchbooks or journals, especially suited to capture stylus input on tablet PCs.
Windows Journal writes .JNT files when you save a note. These files store raw ink stroke data, graphical content, and layout in a binary container. They are intended for reuse and further editing in the Windows Journal application or viewed using Windows Journal Viewer. Microsoft discontinued Windows Journal and Journal Viewer in 2016 (via update KB3161102) due to security vulnerabilities in the .JNT file parser.
On a technical level this format can be identified by specific byte signatures: the first four bytes at the file start are 0x4E 0x42 0x00 0x00 (ASCII "NB\0\0"), often followed by strings such as ROOT ENTRY, CONTENTS, PROP, DICT among other internal keywords.
