What is a JNG file?

A .JNG file is a JPEG Network Graphics Bitmap file.

JPEG Network Graphics Bitmap (.jng) is a raster image file used for compressing photographic-quality images with transparency. It combines the color-compression efficiency of JPEG with the PNG-style structure and optional alpha channel transparency. Originally developed as part of the MNG animation format suite, JNG files can also stand alone as single-image files.

Images in JNG format include a main JPEG-compressed color component stored inside one or more JDAT chunks, and optionally an alpha mask for transparency. The alpha mask may be encoded losslessly using PNG-style IDAT chunks (with bit depths of 1, 2, 4, 8 or 16 bits), or lossy using JPEG-style JDAA chunks (always 8-bit). If both 8-bit and 12-bit JPEG color images are included for compatibility, they are separated by a special JSEP chunk.

Files begin with an 8-byte signature: 0x8B 4A 4E 47 0D 0A 1A 0A at byte offset 0. This signature distinguishes standalone JNG from other PNG-family files.
