What are J2C files and how to open them

What is a J2C file?

A .J2C file is a JPEG 2000 Code Stream Image File (.j2c) file.

JPEG 2000 Code Stream Image File (.j2c) is a file containing a raw JPEG 2000 codestream - that is, the compressed image data without the surrounding file wrapper that's used in JP2 or similar formats. It uses the wavelet-based compression from the JPEG 2000 standard (ISO/IEC 15444-1), and supports both lossy and lossless compression. These files are created by encoders that output only the codestream, not the full JP2 file format.

Because .j2c files contain only the codestream, programs that read them must interpret the marker segments, tile-parts, and image data directly without relying on JP2 containers or metadata boxes. Once read, the codestream can be decoded into a full image; it may also be embedded inside other formats or wrapped in a JP2 file if metadata or color profile information is needed.

Files begin with a two-byte Start of Codestream (SOC) marker 0xFF4F, immediately followed by the Image and Tile Size (SIZ) marker 0xFF51. The codestream ends with the End of Codestream (EOC) marker 0xFFD9 as its last two bytes. These markers and their required positions are defined in the JPEG 2000 Part 1 core standard.
