Opening IDML files

Did your computer fail to open an IDML file? We explain what IDML files are and recommend software that we know can open or convert your IDML files.

What is an IDML file?

The .idml file extension is used for a proprietary document file format that was created by Adobe Systems. The IDML in this file extension stands for InDesign Markup Language, and these IDML files are also known as Adobe InDesign Markup Language documents, which can be created, opened and edited by using the Adobe InDesign software.

The Adobe InDesign software is bundled in the Adobe Creative Suite (CS), which is a set of programs that can be used for creating and editing multimedia documents, photos, images and animations. The .idml file format is the successor of the .idx file format. These .idml files are implemented with compatibility support for other multimedia content authoring and editing applications, which means third party programs can also be used to open and edit these IDML documents. The previous IDX format was difficult to support with third party applications, which is why Adobe Systems created the IDML format.

An IDML file contains multimedia content objects, formatting attributes, layout properties and meta details. It's best to open and edit the content of these IDML files with the use of Adobe InDesign.

Try a universal file viewer

In addition to the products listed above, I would suggest that you try a universal file viewer like Free File Viewer. It can open over 200 different types of files - and very likely yours too! Download Free File Viewer.
