HUS File

What are HUS files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a HUS file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your HUS files.

What is a HUS file?

A .HUS file is a Husqvarna Embroidery Design file.

Files in the .hus format are embroidery design files created by Husqvarna-Viking sewing machines and design tools. These files are used by Husqvarna's older "legacy" machines (such as the Designer, Rose, and Orchidea series) to store pattern designs that include stitch path data, color (thread) references, and layout/positioning information. The files are what machine operators load into their sewing machine - either from a card, disk, or USB - so the machine can stitch the design.

The .hus file is produced (written) by Husqvarna-Viking tools or software, or saved from embroidery design software that supports Husqvarna formats. Once produced, the file is read directly by compatible Husqvarna embroidery machines to guide stitching: it tells the machine where to move, when to change thread colors, what stitch types to use, and how to position the pattern in the hoop. Some software can convert designs into .hus format so they can be used on older Husqvarna machines.

Technically, .hus is a binary format that starts with a four-byte 'magic number' header 0x5B AF C8 00 identifying it as a Husqvarna HUS file. After that comes fields for total stitch count and number of thread colors, followed by signed coordinate bounds for X and Y, offsets into sections for color/thread definitions and stitch commands, then compressed data in a proprietary scheme related to early ARJ-style compression.
