What is a GTO file?

A .GTO file is a Gerber Top Overlay file.

A Gerber Top Overlay File with the extension .GTO is a layer file used in printed circuit board (PCB) design and manufacturing. It stores the silkscreen (overlay or legend) data meant for the top face of a PCB. This includes markings such as component labels, polarity indicators, logos, outlines, text, and other identifiers that are printed in non-conductive ink on the finished board's top side. The file is not an editable schematic or copper trace layout - it's strictly for visual and manufacturing reference.

These files are produced by PCB computer-aided design (CAD) tools when generating fabrication outputs. The GTO file corresponds to one layer of a set of Gerber files, each representing different layers like copper, solder mask, or paste mask. Once generated, the GTO file is used by PCB fabricators and silkscreen printers to determine exactly what legend art appears on top of the board. Designers and manufacturers often preview .GTO files with Gerber viewers (such as GERBV) to check for errors before fabrication.

Technically, .GTO files are text files encoded in the Gerber format - typically the Extended Gerber standard known as RS-274X. They use standard Gerber commands and syntax to define apertures, format statements, units (inches or millimeters), coordinate data, and graphics draw or flash operations that generate the printed legend. The file has a header that defines coordinate formatting and unit mode, followed by aperture definitions and then drawing instructions. Every graphics object in the silkscreen layer uses this command-based vector approach, not raster data.

Extension .GTO is part of a widely used naming convention for Gerber layer files, where .GTO specifically denotes the Top Overlay (silkscreen) layer. Other extensions similarly identify different physical or functional layers (for example .GTL for top copper, .GTS for top solder mask, .GBO for bottom overlay). Using correct file naming helps fabrication houses quickly identify and assemble all necessary layers to produce the final PCB.
