What are GEM files and how to open them

GEM files have multiple uses, and GEM Meta is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

How to open GEM files
Important: Different programs may use files with the GEM file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your GEM file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
While we have not verified the apps ourselves yet, our users have suggested ten different GEM openers which you will find listed below.

While GEM Metafile is a popular type of GEM-file, we know of 3 different uses of the .GEM file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.
McAfee AV Pattern Update (newer Engine)
We know that one GEM format is McAfee AV Pattern Update (newer Engine). We have not yet analyzed in detail what these files contain and what they are used for. We're working on it.
Ruby Gem Package
We know that one GEM format is Ruby Gem Package. We have not yet analyzed in detail what these files contain and what they are used for. We're working on it.
Various apps that use files with this extension
