What is a DVI file?
DVI files have multiple uses, and Device Independent Document (TeX/LaTeX Compiled) is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

How to open DVI files
Important: Different programs may use files with the DVI file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your DVI file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
While we have not verified the apps ourselves yet, our users have suggested nine different DVI openers which you will find listed below.

While Device Independent Document (TeX/LaTeX Compiled) is a popular type of DVI-file, we know of 3 different uses of the .DVI file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.
Digital Video Interactive Video
We know that one DVI format is Digital Video Interactive Video. We have not yet analyzed in detail what these files contain and what they are used for. We're working on it.

We know that one DVI format is Klasik Video Driver. We have not yet analyzed in detail what these files contain and what they are used for. We're working on it.
