What are DIZ files and how to open them

What is a DIZ file?

Description in ZIP-file

Files containing the .diz extension are descriptor files that describe the different files contained in a ZIP file. A ZIP file contains multiple files that have been compressed into a single file, making it easier to distribute the files and freeing up storage space. The DIZ file is saved in plain text format and describes what is contained in the ZIP file.

DIZ files were common back in the days of bulletin board systems, where users dialed in and uploaded and downloaded software. The file_id.diz file in the ZIP files were used to generate the file listings on the BBS.

While Description in ZIP-file is a popular type of DIZ-file, we know of 3 different uses of the .DIZ file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

Diz compressed data

These DIZ files contain data compressed by "diz", a free, experimental, open-source file compressor by Roger Flores. It is a PPMC based compressor written in Python. You will need to uncompress the data in order to access it.

While we have not verified the apps ourselves yet, our users have suggested ten different DIZ openers which you will find listed below.

VENDINFO Information

We know that one DIZ format is VENDINFO Information. We have not yet analyzed in detail what these files contain and what they are used for. We're working on it.
