What are DFS files and how to open them

What is a DFS file?

A .DFS file is a BrainSuite Surface File Format file.

The BrainSuite Surface File Format stores 3D mesh surfaces produced by BrainSuite during MRI surface extraction processing. It is used to represent geometries of cortical surfaces or other brain structures in the form of triangles and vertices, together with optional per‐vertex data such as normals, colors, UV coordinates, labels, or other scalar attributes.

BrainSuite generates this format when extracting surfaces (such as inner cortical, pial, or mid-cortical surfaces) from segmented MRI volumes. Once written, other stages of processing - registration, labeling, visualization - may read the surface and its associated per-vertex attributes. Meshes from this format may also be converted to more generic formats (for example STL) for certain uses, though such conversions often lose data fields required by BrainSuite pipelines.

Internally the file begins with a DFS header that gives the number of triangles and vertices and provides pointers into the file for all optional per-vertex fields. Triangle data is stored as triples of 32-bit integers (indices into the vertex list). Vertex positions, normals, colors, UVs, etc., are stored as 32-bit floats. Labels (if present) use 16-bit integers. The file signature starts with the ASCII sequence "DFS_" at offset 0, followed by "EV2.0" at offset 5.

How to open DFS files

Important: Different programs may use files with the DFS file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your DFS file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
