What are DDB files and how to open them

What is a DDB file?

DDB files have multiple uses, and AllMyNotes Organizer Data Base is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

AllMyNotes Organizer Data Base

AllMyNotes Organizer Data Base files store all notes, attachments, images, and related information in a single, encrypted database used by the AllMyNotes Organizer application for Windows. They hold hierarchical note content created by the program, supporting features such as rich text formatting, embedded files, reminders, and organization in a folder tree.

The native format is written by AllMyNotes Organizer. All data - including notes, images, attachments, and internal indexes - is held together in one file. The format is designed so that only a small tree-structure of note titles loads at startup; individual notes and attachments load only when needed, which limits memory use. Version changes in the format can be managed via export or settings.

Security and reliability are major features. Data in the file is encrypted on disk always, whether or not a password has been set. Encryption involves an 1800-bit key used to protect the data; additionally AES-256 is used to protect the database key with a password, and ChaCha22 is used to encrypt the overall contents. The system stores records duplicated in several places so minor corruption can be healed automatically, and even if a large part of the file (up to about 90 %) is damaged, remaining data can still be accessed.

The format supports unlimited file size for practical purposes, bounded only by the underlying file system (for example, up to 16 exabytes on NTFS), and Unicode is used for all text. The disk file contains an internal virtual file system where deleted or unused fragments are reused. Periodically on exiting, the file is automatically defragmented for performance.

Files of this format begin with identifiable byte signatures. At offset 0 there is the ASCII signature "BD". At byte offset 12 appears a Unicode string corresponding to "AllMyNotes [www.vladonai.com]". Other signatures include the presence of "ALLMYNOTES" in the file and substrings like "W'W'W'.'V'L'A'D'O'N'A'I'.'C'O'M".

Important: Different programs may use files with the DDB file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your DDB file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

DeSmuME DataBase

.DDB files are database files used by DeSmuME. DeSmuME is an emulator, a software used to imitate the environment of another software, in this case, the gaming environment of Nintendo DS.

These .DDB files needed to run the environment of DeSmuME and enable the computer to play games designed for the Nintendo DS.

Windows Device Dependent Bitmap

We know that one DDB format is Windows Device Dependent Bitmap. We have not yet analyzed in detail what these files contain and what they are used for. We're working on it.
