What is a DBS file?

Cavewars Sounds Archive

Cavewars Sounds Archive files hold collections of sound effects used by the DOS strategy game Cavewars, produced in 1996. These archives store multiple WAV-format audio tracks, bundled together for the game to load its sounds during play.

The files are created by the Cavewars game developers and read by the game engine at runtime. Within the game's data folder, each archive provides a range of effects - such as unit attacks, ambient cave noises, magic spells or interface clicks. The archive serves as a simple sound bank, letting the game access specific WAV data by seeking into the file to where an individual sound begins.

Internally the archive identifies itself starting with the ASCII string wavfile at the very beginning of the file, offset zero. Additional occurrences of "WAVFILE" may also appear elsewhere in the data, helping tools recognize this specific format among others. Data following this header are arranged as individual WAV segments.

.DBS files are the saved project files of DBSchema. DBSchema is a software program used to create and manage database systems. The user can edit a project file until he is satisfied with the functions of the designed database.

DBSchema has user-friendly features that allow users to visually create and edit databases without the need for complex programming languages like SQL.

SQLBase Database File

SQLBase Database File stores everything needed for a relational database used by the SQLBase engine from OpenText (originally Gupta Technologies, then Centura/Unify). It holds tables, indexes, schema definitions, and binary large objects (BLOBs) all in a single proprietary binary file. It is suitable for applications that require a full-featured SQL database with transaction logs, crash recovery, and support for growth over time.

New databases are created from a template file named START.DBS, which contains the system catalog tables maintained by SQLBase and reflects the server version's database structure. The template ensures consistency of core metadata each time a database is initialized. Databases must follow naming rules: names up to 8 characters, starting with a letter, using only letters or digits, and stored in a subdirectory with the same name as the database file (without extension). SQLBase automatically adds the file extension when creating databases.

The database file works together with one or more transaction log files kept in the same directory. These log files record before- and after-images of changes for rollback and crash recovery. When a new client connects, the active log file begins; SQLBase rotates log files when they reach certain size thresholds. Without the matching log files, the .dbs file cannot be fully used for recovery.

Internally, the .dbs file is organized into fixed-size pages. Each page holds exactly one type of data: row data, index B-trees, system catalog, or BLOB storage. The standard page size in many SQLBase versions (Windows, OS/2, Windows NT, NetWare) is 1024 bytes. Every page has headers indicating physical page number, page type, group number, logical page number, links to previous/next pages, and a pointer to its last transaction log record. Such structure supports efficient lookup, storage of variable-length rows using slot tables, and management of free space.
