What are CVA files and how to open them

What is a CVA file?

CVA files have multiple uses, and Canvas Macro is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Canvas Macro File

Canvas Macro File (extension .CVA) is a sequence-set file created by Canvas X (developed by ACD Systems). It stores one or more recorded macros ("sequences") which automate tasks inside Canvas X's Sequences palette. Such files let users save, share, load, run, and edit sets of actions inside Canvas X.

Canvas X writes .CVA files when the user saves a sequence set via Edit → Sequences… Each sequence set is enclosed in a .CVA file. When Canvas X closes a modified sequence set, it prompts to save it. The standard installation of Canvas 12 includes a built-in sequence set named Standard.CVA, stored in the "Sequences" folder.

While Canvas Macro File is a popular type of CVA-file, we know of 3 different uses of the .CVA file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

Compaq Diagnostics

Compaq Diagnostics is a settings-format file used by Hewlett-Packard's system tools, especially as part of HP's SoftPaq update and diagnostics utilities. It is produced internally by diagnostic or device-management software to carry metadata about Software Updates, operating environments, hardware and system configuration. These files are meant to be read by HP's deployment or diagnostics utilities, not edited by general users.

The file is created when HP packages updates or collects system configuration and diagnostic information (for example during factory setup or when running "Compaq Configuration Record" under Windows). It serves to record information such as what software or firmware is being updated, its version, what operating systems it supports, what devices are involved, and how silent installation should be performed. It is also used to make a Preinstalled Software Listing when the system is built.

SoftPaq package updates distributed by HP include one of these files along with the update executable and other deliverables. Diagnostics or system management tools use the file to decide compatibility, to display information to the user or automation system (such as silent install flags), and to control how updates are applied.

Internally the file is ASCII-text based and begins with the literal "[CVAFileInformation]" at the very start (offset 0). It contains labeled fields ("US.SOFTWARE DESCRIPTION", "VERSION", "OPERATING SYSTEMS", "DEVICES", "SUPPORTEDLANGUAGES", "Install Execution", "SilentInstall", "System Information" etc.), organized in sections identifying software title, installation command(s), device compatibility and general versioning and support metadata.

While we have not verified the apps ourselves yet, our users have suggested three different CVA openers which you will find listed below.

HP System Software Manager Update Package

Files that contain the .cva file extension are most commonly associated with the HP Systems Software Manager. CVA files are a part of SoftPaq update packages distributed by HP.

Each SoftPaq update package contains a setup executable file, a CVA file, and the deliverable files. The CVA file that is included in these packages contains the name of the software update, the update version and a single command that executes the update on the user's PC.
