Opening CMS files

Did your computer fail to open a CMS file? We explain what CMS files are and recommend software that we know can open or convert your CMS files.

What is a CMS file?

The .cms file extension is used for a source file format, which was developed by LexisNexis for one of their software products. These CMS files are also called CaseMap source files and are used by the CaseMap software, which was also created by LexisNexis. This software was designed for Windows PCs and provides case, facts and data management tools for lawyers, investigators and other legal professionals.

These CMS files contain source code, which allows the CaseMap software to perform its intended functions. These .cms files are usually found in the directory where the CaseMap software is installed.

These .cms files are not meant to be opened. It's recommended to leave these CMS files alone, in order for the CaseMap software to continue functioning correctly.

Try a universal file viewer

In addition to the products listed above, I would suggest that you try a universal file viewer like Free File Viewer. It can open over 200 different types of files - and very likely yours too! Download Free File Viewer.
