What are CL2 files and how to open them

What is a CL2 file?

CL2 files have multiple uses, and Easy CD Creator Layout is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Easy CD Creator Layout

Easy CD Creator Layout files store a saved layout or project created by the Easy CD Creator / Adaptec / Roxio CD mastering software. These include the artist/title, file and folder arrangement, CD track settings (data or audio), and any CD layout options for burning a disc. The layout is not the actual CD or audio data; rather, it tells the program what will be placed on the disc and in what order or structure.

These files are produced when "Save As…" or "Save CD Layout" is chosen in Easy CD Creator or Roxio's layout/dialog modes. Later the layout can be reopened for editing, such as rearranging file order, adding or removing items, changing settings, or printing jewel case and disc label inserts. When ready, the layout is burned to a CD or otherwise used to generate disc image or recording directives.

Internally this format is a Microsoft OLE2 Compound Document (also known as CDFV2), which begins with the byte sequence D0 CF 11 E0 A1 B1 1A E1 00 at offset 0. It includes directory streams named Contents and other metadata streams. Typical identifying strings embedded include SesnDescriptor, CD_PLUS, and 0090. In newer versions there is a non‐null CLSID GUID in the Root Storage, while older layout files omit that value.

How to open CL2 files

Important: Different programs may use files with the CL2 file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your CL2 file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While we have not verified the apps ourselves yet, our users have suggested two different CL2 openers which you will find listed below.

While Easy CD Creator Layout is a popular type of CL2-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .CL2 file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

Hy-Tek Meet Results

Hy-Tek Meet Results files store the final or intermediate swimming meet outcome data produced by the Meet Manager software from Hy-Tek Ltd. These records include individual swimmer and relay performance results, placements, team points, and related met-event metadata. These files were created so teams using Hy-Tek's Team Manager or submitting results to national databases like SWIMS or US Masters Swimming could exchange meet results electronically.

Meet Manager writes these files when the user selects Export → Results for Team Manager or SWIMS. The output is a "zipped results file" containing both this older format and a newer HY3‐format version. Systems using Team Manager before version 4.0G only support this older format version. The data is used for importing results into other Hy-Tek applications or third-party systems and for archival or sharing purposes.

This version does not include number-of-dives information for diving events, though it does contain dive scores. For tasks requiring them, the HY3 file or full extract must be used.

Files begin with a signature: the first byte is 0x41 ("A"), followed by 0x30 ("0") at offset 0, and at offset 3 the ASCII string "V302MeetResultsHy-Tek,Ltd" appears.
