Did your computer fail to open a CHM file? We explain what they are used for and recommend software that we know can open or otherwise handle your .CHM files.

What is a CHM file?

Files with the .chm extension are most commonly associated with Microsoft help documentation files. The CHM files are compiled to create the help contents of an associated application. These files are normally saved in compressed HTML format and include the images, text and hyperlinks contained in the help files.

The .chm file extension is also used for Chameleon source font files and Chemdraw chemical structure files.

Suggest another file format using extension CHM

While we know of one file format using the .CHM file extension, there may be more. It is widespread that different programs use files with the same file extension for very different types of data. Please let us know if you are aware of a different kind of .CHM file.

These apps are known to open certain types of CHM files. Remember, different programs may use CHM files for different purposes, so you may need to try out a few of them to be able to open your specific file.
