CGR File
What are CGR files and how to open them
Are you having problems opening a CGR file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your CGR files.
What is a CGR file?
A .CGR file is a Quest3D Data file.
Quest3D Data files store assembled scene content and program logic for applications built in the Quest3D development environment from Act-3D B.V. They hold all the visual scripting channels, objects, textures, meshes, animations, logic, and user interface elements that define how the scene behaves at runtime. Quest3D uses channels (modular components such as renderers, cameras, logic operators, sound controllers) connected in a graph structure to build interactive 3D applications; these files persist a group of channels and related settings for part or all of a project.
These files are written by Quest3D's Channel Group saving functionality. The Channel Group can be saved on its own or as part of a larger project; when published or run, the engine loads the Quest3D viewer which in turn reads these data files and their dependencies (often DLLs for each channel) to execute the scene. Often, assets like 3D objects or textures may be embedded into the channel data or referenced externally depending on how the group was saved.
Internally, the file begins with an ASCII signature "ACTF" at offset 0 and contains other notable tags like "ZIOS", "ZINS", and "ZICB" at specific offsets such as 24, 36, and 48 bytes, respectively. These markers identify sections of the file, some of which are compressed (commonly with zlib) to store archived channel data.
