What are CGT files and how to open them

What is a CGT file?

CGT files have multiple uses, and Cricket Graph Template is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Cricket Graph Template

Cricket Graph Template files define a saved layout setup for graphs created with the legacy Cricket Graph program for Macintosh. They serve as templates that store formatting information - such as axis scales, labels, graph styles, and layout preferences - for reuse when drawing new charts, without including the actual numeric data.

These templates are produced by Cricket Graph as part of its graphing workflow. After choosing graph options (type of plot, appearance settings, axis labels, etc.), a graph template file can be saved so that the same visual style can be applied to future data sets. The program reads a template and applies its stored settings when rendering new graphs.

These files begin with the ASCII byte signature d 00 54 47 ("d.TG") at offset zero. That signature identifies the file as a Cricket Graph Template.

How to open CGT files

Important: Different programs may use files with the CGT file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your CGT file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

GOLD Parser Tables

GOLD Parser Tables is a format used by the GOLD Parsing System to store the combined parsing data derived from a grammar. It captures the results of grammar analysis - particularly both DFA (Deterministic Finite Automaton) and LALR(1) parsing tables - so that parsing engines can later load those tables and apply them to recognize syntactic structures in input text. These files are generated by the GOLD Parser Builder program when a grammar has been successfully defined, tested, and compiled.

Once generated, a GOLD Parser Tables file serves as a static representation of everything the parsing engine needs: the symbol definitions, character sets, rules, state transitions, and other metadata for lexing and parsing. The parsing engine reads this file, constructs internal data structures, then processes input by first tokenizing (via DFA) and then applying the LALR(1) lookahead-based parsing. Changes to the grammar require regenerating the tables.

As a technical identifier, GOLD Parser Tables files begin with a Unicode header string, typically "GOLD Parser Tables/v1.0", stored as a null-terminated Unicode string (two bytes per character), followed by a series of records. The file includes records marked by single-byte identifiers such as 'P' for grammar parameters, 'T' for table counts, 'C' for character set table entries, 'S' for symbol table members, plus other records for rules, DFA states, and LALR states.
