What are CDO files and how to open them

What is a CDO file?

A .CDO file is a Crescendo Music Notation Score file.

Crescendo Music Notation Score files store music notation projects created in the Crescendo Music Notation Editor from NCH Software. They preserve all information needed to author, edit or layout sheet music: musical notes, meter and key signatures, staves and systems, page layout, tempo, lyrics, and other score formatting. Such files are intended both for composing new pieces and for revising or sharing scores with full editing fidelity.

The file is produced exclusively by Crescendo when a musical composition is saved in its native project format. It is not intended for audio playback directly, though Crescendo can export the contents to standard formats like MIDI for playback and image formats such as PNG for sharing the notation visually. Other applications generally cannot reliably interpret or edit the file without using Crescendo itself.

Files begin with a binary header signature including the ASCII string lsdf followed by bytes 01-00-05-00. In hex this signature appears at offset 0 as 6C 73 64 66 01 00 05 00 ... which helps software identify the format among others.

How to open CDO files

Important: Different programs may use files with the CDO file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your CDO file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
