CCP File

What are CCP files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a CCP file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your CCP files.

What is a CCP file?

A .CCP file is an AutoCAD Color Palette file.

AutoCAD Color Palette files are text-based palette definitions used by Autodesk's AutoCAD software, especially older versions, to store a full 256-color palette for drawing and display settings. These files define each color explicitly using RGB (and sometimes CMYK or a black component), along with overall palette settings like color model, gamma, and hue/saturation/value ranges. They were commonly named "ccolor.ccp" or just "*.ccp" and represent AutoCAD's standard default color scheme, not user-created color books or external color libraries.

These palette files are created/used by AutoCAD itself; for example, when the user selects the "Standard AutoCAD Color Palette" in early releases, the built-in ccolor.ccp file is used to define the colors available under the AutoCAD Color Index (ACI). AutoCAD reads these files at startup or when loading color palettes to populate the Index Color tab in the Color Palette dialog. Users rarely write them manually, but they can edit them with a text editor because they consist of plain-text sections and entries.

Internally, the file starts with a semicolon or comment marker at byte offset zero (e.g. a ";" or "; STANDARD AUTOCAD COLOR PALETTE") and contains keywords like ColorModel, NumColors, ColorDef, followed by lines defining each color such as Color000, Color001, up to Color255. There are also header fields like HSV0 and HSV1 (defining the start and end of HSV gamut), GAMMA, COMP, CUCR (under-color removal), CBKG (black generation), among others.
