What are CATPRODUCT files and how to open them

What is a CATPRODUCT file?

A .CATPRODUCT file is a CATIA Assembly file.

This kind of file is a product-assembly description generated by CATIA V5 (a CAD program by Dassault Systèmes). It records how individual part files and sub-assemblies are put together, what components contain which sub-components, how those are constrained or positioned, and how the assembly structure is organized.

The assembly format writer is CATIA V5 (using its Assembly Design or Product Structure workbench). It creates these files whenever an overall product (made of parts or sub-products) is saved. Consumers of the file, including CATIA V5 itself or external tools via import interfaces, read that structure, load the referenced parts, nested assemblies, constraints, metadata like part names, part numbers, and instances. A complete set of referenced parts or sub-assemblies is needed for everything to resolve correctly.

Files in this format are binary, proprietary to CATIA V5, and do not directly include the detailed geometric shape data of parts - they only reference geometry stored in individual "part" or "sub-product" files. Details such as nested references, constrained relationships, instance names, and hierarchical product tree information are encoded.

Typically, a file begins with a proprietary CATIA header containing version identifiers (e.g. the V5 release level); it may also include internal containers for product structure, reference links to CATPart or CATProduct documents, and instance metadata.

How to open CATPRODUCT files

Important: Different programs may use files with the CATPRODUCT file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your CATPRODUCT file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
