BXY File

What are BXY files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a BXY file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your BXY files.

What is a BXY file?

A .BXY file is a NuFX Archive (with Binary II Header) file.

NuFX Archive (with Binary II Header) stores one or more Apple II files in a NuFX container (NuFile eXchange), wrapped in a Binary II envelope. It preserves ProDOS metadata - file type and auxiliary type - by first adding a Binary II header, then placing the full NuFX structure inside. It is mainly created using ShrinkIt on Apple II systems.

The NuFX archive portion behaves like ordinary NuFX archives: it begins with a master header that includes a magic identifier, timestamps, and a record count. Each record represents a file (or disk image) and may include multiple "threads" such as data, resource forks, or control messages. Within threads, data may be compressed using ShrinkIt's compression schemes.

The Binary II wrapper adds a 128-byte header before the NuFX data. This wrapper includes the file's ProDOS attributes - original filename, type ($E0), auxiliary type ($8002), creation/modification dates - and records the file size in 128-byte blocks. It enables metadata survival during transmissions or storage where ProDOS file information might otherwise be lost.

Signature information: the file begins with the bytes 0A 47 4C C3 E0 02 80 00 at offset 0 (Binary II header), and contains at offset 128 the magic "N.F.l" sequence (4E F5 46 E9 6C E5) identifying the embedded NuFX archive.
