What are BXT files and how to open them

What is a BXT file?

A .BXT file is a Balabolka Text Document file.

Balabolka Text Document files store richly annotated text and voice settings for use with Balabolka, a text‐to‐speech (TTS) software. They are meant for saving both what is to be read aloud and how it is read: the document's text content plus settings for voice, rate, pitch, volume and pronunciation corrections. Balabolka uses these files to preserve a reading project so it can be edited, spoken, or exported later.

Created and edited by Balabolka, these files are saved from within that program, often by choosing its "Save" or "Save Document" option after entering text and adjusting the desired audio parameters. Later the document may be opened back in Balabolka to resume editing, replay the speech, or export an audio file (such as WAV or MP3) using the stored settings.

Internally they are XML‐format text documents. The file begins with an XML declaration including version="1.0" and encoding="UTF-8", followed by a root tag "BXTDocument". Key elements include CONTENT (the text itself), VOICE NAME, RATE, PITCH, VOLUME, BOOKMARKS or QBOOKMARK, and tags for encoding and character set like UTF-8. The string "SAPI" also appears, referring to Microsoft's Speech API.

How to open BXT files

Important: Different programs may use files with the BXT file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your BXT file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
