What are BRW files and how to open them

What is a BRW file?

A .BRW file is a Ray Dream Data file.

Ray Dream Data files store 3D scene information created by Ray Dream Designer and later Ray Dream Studio, a now-discontinued graphics and animation software. These files include full scene data such as objects defined via meshes, splines, or primitives; material and texture assignments; lighting sources; camera positions; and rendering preview settings. Their purpose is to save everything needed to re-open or edit a modeled 3D scene rather than produces a final rendered image.

Ray Dream Studio was developed initially starting in 1989 for Macintosh by Ray Dream, Inc., later acquired by Fractal Design and MetaCreations. Users build models, set up shaders, define environments and render through Studio. The software writes Ray Dream Data files as native scene files, so that designers can resume modeling or animation from where they left off without loss of detail or configuration. Artifacts include color, depth, previews, storyboards, animation frames, and render layers.

These files begin with the ASCII characters "3DC{" at byte offset zero. Other internal identifiers include strings such as "RAY DREAM DESIGNER(R)" and tags like ASCI, COMM, DPTH, ISEX, KIND, NPLN, PRVW, STOR, TDTA, TILE, TILS. These help the software distinguish sections for preview data, texture tiles, metadata and more.

How to open BRW files
