What are BRU files and how to open them

What is a BRU file?

A .BRU file is an Invision Brushes file.

Invision Brushes files store brush definitions used by the Invision animation or painting software on the Atari ST platform. The program writes these files to save custom brush shapes for use during drawing or animation, allowing reusing and combining artistic brush designs in later work.

A brush definition in this format typically defines a pattern or mask that the software applies repeatedly as the user draws or paints, creating shapes or textures. Once created, a brush file produced by Invision is loaded by the same software when selecting a brush tool, and used to stamp or stroke brush marks on a canvas or animation frame.

Each file begins with the ASCII characters INVISIONBRUSHES at the very start (offset 0), followed by a byte 0x2E at offset 18. These signature bytes help identify Invision Brushes files.

How to open BRU files

Important: Different programs may use files with the BRU file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your BRU file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
