What are BRT files and how to open them

What is a BRT file?

BRT files have multiple uses, and BeRoTracker Module is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

BeRoTracker Module

BeRoTracker module files are song projects created by BeRoTracker, a tracker software by Benjamin Rosseaux. These files store musical compositions made using samples, patterns, channels, and instruments - similar to classic module tracker formats like XM or IT - but using BeRo's own format. They are written by BeRoTracker when saving in its native format.

The format supports saving extended sample-based instruments and allows use of VST (Virtual Studio Technology) plugins or BDP instruments directly assigned to tracks. It shares features with BeRoTracker's import formats: it can load MOD, XM, S3M, IT, and then save in the BRT format.

Internally, files of this type begin with an ASCII signature "BRTF" at offset 0. They include sections labelled "BPMI", "CHAN", "INFO", "INST", "MODU", and "PATT" that define tempo/pattern information, instrument definitions, module metadata, etc.

How to open BRT files

Important: Different programs may use files with the BRT file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your BRT file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While we have not verified the apps ourselves yet, our users have suggested five different BRT openers which you will find listed below.

We know that one BRT format is Bridge Tape Recorder Tape. We have not yet analyzed in detail what these files contain and what they are used for. We're working on it.
