What are BRSTM files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a BRSTM file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your BRSTM files.

What is a BRSTM file?

A .BRSTM file is a BRSTM Audio file.

BRSTM Audio is an audio stream format developed by Nintendo for use on Wii and GameCube video game systems. Games store long background music tracks, ambient sounds and repeated loops in this format so the console can play them directly from game discs without requiring large amounts of uncompressed audio. The audio data inside is compressed (using ADPCM), and the format supports seamless looping so music can repeat without audible gaps.

Files with this extension are typically generated when developers package audio resources into game builds for Wii or GameCube. Modding tools and game resource editors (for example BrawlBox) are used to view, extract, convert or replace BRSTM audio streams, but the format itself is originally produced by Nintendo's game development pipeline.

Internally the file begins with the ASCII signature "RSTM", followed by several chunks. There is a HEAD chunk containing metadata such as sample rate, channel count, loop points, volume and decoding coefficients; an ADPC chunk holding per-channel ADPCM history state; and a DATA chunk with the interleaved ADPCM sound blocks. All multi-byte values are stored big-endian.
