What are BRAIN files and how to open them

What is a BRAIN file?

A .BRAIN file is a BootX Learned Bootblocks file.

BootX Learned Bootblocks files are used with an Amiga virus detection and protection tool called BootX, written by Peter Stuer. These files store a set of known good bootblock patterns that BootX uses to recognize whether a disk's bootblock is standard, custom, or infected by a bootblock virus. When BootX checks the bootblock of a floppy or hard disk, it compares what it reads against the entries stored in such a bootblock library file.

These files are produced by BootX when its author or the user adds new bootblocks that the program does not yet recognize. These new patterns are saved in the "brainfile" to expand BootX's recognition ability. BootX can load this file (or "brainfiles") so that custom or newly learned bootblocks will not be falsely flagged as suspicious or unknown. The standard BootX installation includes a built-in default brainfile ("BootX.Brain"), and users can merge or replace it using the Load Brainfile or Merge functions.

BootX Learned Bootblocks files begin with the ASCII signature "BXBF" at the start (bytes 0x42 0x58 0x42 0x46 0x00 at offset 0). This signature identifies them uniquely so BootX can detect when a brainfile is present.

How to open BRAIN files

Important: Different programs may use files with the BRAIN file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your BRAIN file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While we have not verified the apps ourselves yet, our users have suggested two different BRAIN openers which you will find listed below.
