What are BRAINFILE files and how to open them

What is a BRAINFILE file?

A .BRAINFILE file is a Siegfried Antivirus Professional Virus Data file.

Siegfried Antivirus Professional virus data files are used by the Amiga utility Siegfried Antivirus Professional to store its virus definitions. These files are updated over time to include descriptions and signatures of known viruses so that the antivirus tool can detect file, link, bootblock, or block-level infections.

They are created and maintained by the Siegfried Antivirus Professional program. When new viruses are discovered, their identifying data - such as textual or byte patterns - is added to the virus data file. The antivirus loads this file at runtime and compares parts of disks, disk blocks, or files against the stored patterns in order to recognize infections. Without a current version of the data file, the software cannot identify newer viruses.

In technical terms the data file begins with the ASCII signature "SBFV1." The file also contains the string "VIRUS" elsewhere.

How to open BRAINFILE files

Important: Different programs may use files with the BRAINFILE file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your BRAINFILE file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
