What are BPM files and how to open them

What is a BPM file?

A .BPM file is a Bizagi Process Modeler Document file.

Bizagi Process Modeler documents are project files created by the Bizagi Modeler application for designing, documenting, and maintaining business process models. These files store the full editable model of processes including diagrams, swimlanes, elements (tasks, events, gateways), documentation at both the process and element levels, and any extended attributes or custom settings defined within a project. They serve as the source workspace where process analysts build and evolve process designs before exporting or publishing them.

These documents are produced and opened by Bizagi Modeler. They preserve all technical and visual details needed for ongoing editing - shapes, connectors, layout, artifact annotations, properties, authoring information, versioning, etc. While they contain rich metadata and can transport the entirety of a modeled process, they are not meant to be direct distribution formats for those who only need to read or reference the content. For sharing with broader audiences, Bizagi recommends publishing the content into Word, PDF, Excel, Web, or MediaWiki formats, or exporting process diagrams/images in formats like PNG, SVG or JPG.

The file's format is proprietary to Bizagi Modeler and incorporates a ZIP-based container structure. Inside are multiple XML and related data files storing different aspects of the model such as model metadata, user settings, diagram content, swimlanes (participants), printing preferences, preferences, artifacts, and documentation. Byte-level signatures include "PK" at the start (indicating ZIP), plus strings like "DOCUMENTATIONSETTINGS.XMLPK", "PARTICIPANTS.XMLPK", "MODELINFO.XMLPK", "USERINFO.XMLPK", "PREFERENCES.BPPM" and "BIZAGIARTIFACTS" embedded within the package.

How to open BPM files

Important: Different programs may use files with the BPM file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your BPM file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
