What is a BMV file?

A .BMV file is a Teeny Weeny Games Video file.

Teeny Weeny Games created the BMV format to store full-motion video sequences (cutscenes, intros, cinematic scenes) embedded in games such as Discworld II: Missing Presumed…!? and Discworld Noir. These files combine both video frames and audio: the game engine uses them to present story elements rather than interactive gameplay, and players encounter them when the game plays movies or animated segments.

Discworld II's BMV files are written by the Teeny Weeny Games engine; the game itself produces them as part of its asset set. When used, the game reads in the BMV file, decodes both the video and audio streams and plays them in sequence during gameplay. Modern tools like FFmpeg or VLC can open and convert these files - VideoLAN VLC can play BMV directly, and FFmpeg includes a decoder for Discworld II BMV to convert into common formats like MP4 or AVI.

Discworld II's BMV format lacks a global file header; it consists of a sequence of data packets. Each packet begins with a type byte (values including NOP, END, INTER and INTRA frames) and - except for NOP and END - has a 24-bit little-endian length field. Frame data may be stored in forward or backward order. Video frames include optional data such as palette changes, audio, scroll offsets or text commands depending on packet flags.
