What are BMX files and how to open them

What is a BMX file?

BMX files have multiple uses, and Buzz Song is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.

Buzz Song

Buzz Song files store a complete song project created with Jeskola Buzz, a freeware, modular digital audio workstation. They capture the layout of virtual audio modules (called machines), how they are linked, and the musical structure built from patterns and a sequence. These files hold the full blueprint needed so that the song can be loaded back into Buzz for playback or further editing.

Creation of these song files happens inside the Buzz program when a composer arranges machines (instruments and effects), configures their parameters, adds or imports audio samples, designs patterns of notes and control data, and finally arranges those patterns over time in a sequencer. During playback Buzz reads the song file, loads the machines including any referenced sample data, processes the signal chain as defined, and plays the arranged patterns in order according to the sequence. For archival or sharing, one can also export audio (for example to WAV) once the song is composed and arranged.

Song files begin with a specific signature in their binary structure that identifies the format. Within the file are sections such as MACH for machine definitions, SEQU for the sequence, PATT (or variations PATT/PAT2/PATX) for pattern data, WAVT for the sample or wavetable data, and other sections holding parameter values (PARA), MIDI bindings, and GUI or connection layout. Keywords like MASTER, CONN, BLAH and strings like "Buzz" in the header serve as internal identifiers.

How to open BMX files

Important: Different programs may use files with the BMX file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your BMX file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While Buzz Song is a popular type of BMX-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .BMX file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.

Jeskola Buzz Song

Jeskola Buzz song files save full musical compositions created with the Buzz digital music workstation. They store everything needed to reproduce a song inside Buzz: the routing layout of sound modules (machines), all musical patterns, the sequence of those patterns, and optionally any PCM audio samples embedded in the song.

These files are written by Buzz running on Microsoft Windows. They are intended for editing and playback within Buzz itself, allowing the same song to be loaded back in for further modification or listening. Of the two Buzz song formats, one excludes the sample data; this format includes the full data with samples.

Internally the file begins with the ASCII signature "Buzz" in hex at the very start. It contains multiple named data sections like MACH, CONN, PATT, SEQU, WAVT, among others, which correspond to the machines, their connections, patterns, sequence order, and wavetable/sample data.
