BMU File

What are BMU files and how to open them

Are you having problems opening a BMU file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your BMU files.

What is a BMU file?

A .BMU file is an Aurora Engine BioWare Music Unit file.

Aurora Engine BioWare Music Unit files store background music for Neverwinter Nights and other BioWare games using the Aurora engine. They are essentially MP3 audio tracks given a special wrapper so that the game can recognize them as Aurora music. These tracks are used to provide ambient or battle music within in-game environments.

These files are created by converting ordinary MP3 files to BMU format, either by using a tool such as MP3toBMU or by manually adding a short header. Once created, they are placed in the game's music folder and referenced by the game's ambientmusic.2da configuration table. The game reads them during runtime and plays them in the appropriate context.

Every file begins with the ASCII signature "BMUV1.0" at the very start of the file, and includes two null bytes at offset 12. These markers distinguish BMU music files from regular MP3s.
