BMTP File
What are BMTP files and how to open them
Are you having problems opening a BMTP file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your BMTP files.
What is a BMTP file?
A .BMTP file is a Bome MIDI Translator Project file.
Bome MIDI Translator Project files are plain-text configuration files used by Bome Software's MIDI Translator applications (Classic and Pro) to save the complete state of a project involving mapping, routing, and automations. They store all settings that define how MIDI or keystroke inputs are translated into outputs, including custom rules, presets, and device routing. These files allow users to preserve and share complex translation workflows, enabling reopening and editing later.
A project file is written by Bome MIDI Translator (the program's "Save Project" or "Save As" command) and read by that same program when a user opens or loads a project. Each file encapsulates metadata about the project (name, author, version, comments), default input and output MIDI ports, routing settings (including MIDI Thru connections), global script handlers (such as AppleScript on supported platforms), and one or more presets. Each preset groups one or more translators, each defining incoming triggers, outgoing actions, rules or modifiers, and whether the preset is active.
Text editing of a project file is possible (the format is something like an INI-style file), but certain sections - especially rules or translator definitions - require precise syntax and lack line breaks (for rules). Altering these manually is risky unless one is careful. Note that files served to BomeBox devices must be signed correctly; editing can invalidate the signature which prevents proper use on hardware.
The file begins with identifiable keywords and structure markers such as "[Preset.0]" at the start, and contains character sequences like "DEFAULTOUTPORTS", "DEFAULTINPORTS", "PRESET.0", "NAME0", "CHAN", "INCOMING0", "OUTGOING0" among others, which help tools detect that a file is indeed a Bome MIDI Translator Project.
