What are BMA files and how to open them

What is a BMA file?

A .BMA file is a BMA Archiver Compressed Archive file.

BMA Archiver Compressed Archive is an experimental archive format created by Alexander Cherenkov for storing one or more files together in a compressed form. It is intended for general purpose archiving of data (documents, binaries, etc.), particularly when higher compression is desired through a combination of compression techniques. The format is rare and appears to have seen little recent development.

Files known to write this format are produced using the BMA Archiver tool. Once created, BMA archives are typically unpacked or extracted by the same BMA Archiver program; there is little indication of broad support in other archiving utilities.

These archives begin with a signature identifying the format: the four ASCII characters !BMA (hex bytes 21 42 4D 41) at offset zero.

How to open BMA files

Important: Different programs may use files with the BMA file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your BMA file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
