What are BFSAR files and how to open them

What is a BFSAR file?

A .BFSAR file is a Nintendo Binary File Sound ARchive file.

Nintendo's Binary File Sound ARchive files store multiple sound-related components - such as sound effects, banks, sequences, wave data and groups - in a single archive used in games developed with the NintendoWare for Café / NW4F sound engine. They bundle together waveform archives, individual audio files, instrument banks, and metadata so that the game can organize, reference, mix, and play all required audio assets efficiently during gameplay.

These archives are generated by Nintendo's audio authoring tools or middleware during game compilation for platforms such as Wii U and Switch. After creation, runtime code in the game loads the archive, looks up strings, sound info, banks, players, etc., then extracts or streams the needed audio data for sound effects, game music sequences, and grouped audio playback.

Internal structure starts with a header containing the identifier FSAR followed by versioning, endianness markers, and pointers to three main sections: a string table (STRG), an info section (INFO) describing sound entries, banks, groups, players etc., and a file section (FILE) containing the raw audio data and sub-archives. Unique internal keywords like STRG, INFO, FILE are embedded, and header fields identify counts of audio-type entries and list offsets.

How to open BFSAR files

Important: Different programs may use files with the BFSAR file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your BFSAR file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
