What is a BFSTM file?

A .BFSTM file is a BFSTM Audio file.

BFSTM Audio is an audio stream format created by Nintendo for use in the Wii U (and later on other platforms) to hold game music, sound effects, or any streamed sound. It keeps both the audio data and metadata such as looping points and track/channel layout so the system can play or loop the sound as intended in games. It supports formats like PCM or ADPCM, making it useful for efficient playback with fidelity controlled to game hardware specs.

Nintendo produces BFSTM files during game development, often packaging background music or sound assets into this format so they can be streamed or loaded dynamically during gameplay. Extraction tools in the community can decode BFSTM into standard audio files like WAV, and editing workflows typically involve converting from WAV to BFSTM when replacing game sounds or mods.

In technical structure, the file begins with the ASCII signature FSTM at offset zero. At offset 64 the ASCII string INFO appears, marking the start of the info block. That INFO block contains sample rate, sample format (such as PCM 8-bit, PCM 16-bit, or ADPCM), and references to other internal blocks like Data and Region.

How to open BFSTM files

Important: Different programs may use files with the BFSTM file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your BFSTM file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
