What are BFS files and how to open them

What is a BFS file?

A .BFS file is a Halls Of Montezuma Scenario file.

A scenario file for Halls of Montezuma: A Battle History of the United States Marine Corps is used to define a single setup or "scenario" in that game. It specifies the scenario's map layout, terrain types with their movement and combat effects, which military units (including type, side, and strength) participate, their starting positions, scenario duration, and other settings like briefing text and scenario title. It is created by the game's internal scenario editor or "Warplan" tool.

During gameplay the scenario file is read by the game engine: when a player selects a scenario, the game loads this file to display the map, place units, set terrain effects, establish turn count, apply special features like forts or rivers, and launch conditions for victory or defeat. Players may use Warplan to modify existing scenarios or make new ones by editing these settings and saving into this format.

The format can be identified by internal signatures: one known signature is the two-byte value 0x0A518200 at file start. The file also contains ASCII strings such as +T+T embedded, which are distinctive markers of this scenario file format.

How to open BFS files

Important: Different programs may use files with the BFS file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your BFS file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
