BBF File
What are BBF files and how to open them
Are you having problems opening a BBF file or are you simply curious about its contents? We're here to explain the properties of these files and provide you with software that can open or handle your BBF files.
What is a BBF file?
A .BBF file is a ScriptBasic Binary File Format file.
ScriptBasic binary format files store BASIC programs that have been converted from human-readable source code into ScriptBasic's internal executable form so that the program runs faster and without needing to reparse or rebuild the tokenized code. These files are created by ScriptBasic via its "-o" command-line option (or automatically into a cache directory), and later used by the ScriptBasic interpreter to load and execute the precompiled code instead of recompiling from source each time. Development of the code still happens in the traditional BASIC source files; the binary form is a performance and deployment optimization.
Because this binary format is proprietary, each file must match the architecture, operating system, compiler (build), and ScriptBasic version of the interpreter that will run it. Executable behavior is not machine code but ScriptBasic's serialized structures ("internal executable format") such as parsed nodes and a string table, which the interpreter executes. The format is not portable in general: binaries made on one platform or version may not work on another.
Internally the file optionally begins with a UNIX "#! /path/to/scriba" line so that it can be directly executed under UNIX (for example in CGI contexts). After that comes a single byte recording the size of the C type long on the machine used to produce the file, followed by a structured header including a magic constant 0x1A534142, version (high and low), variation version (high and low), build number, date, and an eight‐character zero-terminated "variation" identifier string. Then key counts such as number of global variables, number of nodes in the code, the start node index, and the size of the string table. The nodes come next, then the table of constant strings. Optional tables of function symbol names and global variable names follow.
