What are BBKEYMAP files and how to open them

What is a BBKEYMAP file?

A .BBKEYMAP file is a Blockbench Keymap file.

Blockbench Keymap files store the custom keyboard shortcuts that a user sets up in the 3D editor Blockbench. These files preserve which keys trigger specific tools, view actions, transformations, and other program functions so that the same layout of keyboard commands can be reused or shared between installations. They are written in plain text using JSON and intended as configuration files.

They are produced by Blockbench via its Keybindings settings interface. Within Blockbench, the user opens Preferences → Keybindings to assign or change what key combinations invoke certain actions; when ready, the current keymap can be exported to a keymap file. Such a file can also be loaded so that Blockbench adopts the custom shortcuts recorded in it.

Technically, the file begins with a JSON object that includes a top-level "keys" field, inside of which various Blockbench actions are listed by name (for example "preview_select", "toggle_camera_projection", "export_animation_file"), each mapped to an object indicating the assigned key code and any modifier flags (such as shift or ctrl). The file contains recognizable keywords like "LOAD_KEYMAP", "EXPORT_KEYMAP", "RESET_LAYOUT" among others, and the first bytes at offset zero include a signature like {␍␊␉"keys":{␍␊␉ which identifies it as this format.

How to open BBKEYMAP files

Important: Different programs may use files with the BBKEYMAP file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your BBKEYMAP file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
