What are BBA files and how to open them

What is a BBA file?

A .BBA file is a Blue Byte Archive Format file.

BlueByte Archive Format files hold game resource data such as graphics, sounds, or maps packaged together for use by Blue Byte / Ubisoft games. These archives serve to store multiple files needed by the game in a single container, so that the game can efficiently locate and load its assets during play.

These archives are produced by Ubisoft Entertainment S.A. for its Blue Byte titles, especially the Settlers series. The data inside is not plain text but binary, often compressed or encoded in ways specific to the game. Typically these archives are not meant for end users to edit; they are read at runtime by the game engine to retrieve resources like textures, audio, or levels.

Files begin with a fixed signature at the very start: the four bytes 44 41 46 02 in ASCII that's "BAF" followed by a version byte (0x02). This signature appears at offset zero in the file and identifies the archive as using this format.

How to open BBA files

Important: Different programs may use files with the BBA file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your BBA file is, you may need to try a few different programs.
