What is a BAG file?
BAG files have multiple uses, and AOL Instant Messenger buddy list is one of them. Read more about the other uses further down the page.
AOL Instant Messenger buddy list
These BAG files contain the list of your frequent correspondences, also known as Buddies, on the AOL Instant Messenger application. These lists are organized into groups depending on the relationship with the correspondence. These lists get saved on AOL servers and locally on your device.
How to open BAG files
Important: Different programs may use files with the BAG file extension for different purposes, so unless you are sure which format your BAG file is, you may need to try a few different programs.

While AOL Instant Messenger buddy list is a popular type of BAG-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .BAG file extension. Different software may use files with the same extension for different types of data.
Bag archive
These BAG files are archive files created in Bagger, a graphical user interface used to package a group of data files to create archives. The packages are called 'bags'. It is used in Archivematica, an open-source digital preservation system, to store AIPs (Archival Information Package). AIPs describe the structure and content of an archive file.
