Did your computer fail to open a BAG file? We explain what they are used for and recommend software that we know can open or otherwise handle your .BAG files.
What is a BAG file?
A .BAG file is an AOL Instant Messenger buddy list file. These BAG files contain the list of your frequent correspondences, also known as Buddies, on the AOL Instant Messenger application. These lists are organized into groups depending on the relationship with the correspondence. These lists get saved on AOL servers and locally on your device. We have not yet verified any programs for Windows that work with this specific file format. If you know one, please use the 'Suggest a program' link below. Thanks!
What else are .BAG files used for?
While AOL Instant Messenger buddy list is a popular type of BAG-file, we know of 2 different uses of the .BAG extension.
The BAG file extension indicates to your device which app can open the file. However, different apps may use the same file extension for different types of data. So a BAG opener may not be able to open all kinds of BAG files. In this case, look through both formats to make sure you find the best suited BAG viewer.
These BAG files are archive files created in Bagger, a graphical user interface used to package a group of data files to create archives. The packages are called 'bags'. It is used in Archivematica, an open-source digital preservation system, to store AIPs (Archival Information Package). AIPs describe the structure and content of an archive file.
